India's Tea Map: A World of Flavour
India is the second-largest tea producer in the world, and its tea-growing regions are as diverse as the country itself. From the misty Himalayan foothills to the lush hills of South India, each region produces teas with a distinct character shaped by altitude, climate, and soil. Here's your guide to India's most important tea regions — and what makes each one special.
Assam
Location: Brahmaputra river valley, Northeast India
Altitude: Near sea level
Character: Bold, malty, full-bodied
Assam is the world's largest tea-growing region by area and produces more tea than any other single region on earth. The hot, humid climate and rich alluvial soil are perfect for the robust Camellia sinensis var. assamica plant. Assam teas are the backbone of the classic Indian chai — strong, brisk, and perfect with milk.

Darjeeling
Location: Himalayan foothills, West Bengal
Altitude: 600–2,000 metres
Character: Delicate, floral, muscatel
Often called the "Champagne of teas," Darjeeling produces some of the world's most prized and expensive teas. The cool mountain air, misty mornings, and well-drained slopes create ideal conditions for the delicate Camellia sinensis var. sinensis plant. Darjeeling teas are best enjoyed without milk to appreciate their complex, grape-like muscatel notes.
Nilgiri
Location: Blue Mountains, Tamil Nadu & Kerala, South India
Altitude: 1,000–2,500 metres
Character: Smooth, aromatic, brisk
The Nilgiri hills produce teas year-round thanks to their unique climate. Nilgiri teas are known for their bright, smooth character with a subtle floral aroma — less astringent than Assam, more approachable than Darjeeling. Both whole leaf and CTC teas from Nilgiri are excellent for everyday drinking.

Meghalaya
Location: Northeast India
Altitude: 900–1,500 metres
Character: Light, fresh, earthy
Meghalaya is one of India's emerging tea regions, producing small quantities of high-quality orthodox teas. The region's unique ecosystem — one of the wettest places on earth — gives Meghalaya teas a distinctive freshness and earthy depth that's unlike anything else from India.
Arunachal Pradesh
Location: Far Northeast India
Altitude: Varies
Character: Earthy, bold, rare
Arunachal Pradesh is one of India's most remote and least-known tea regions. Tea cultivation here is still developing, but the teas produced are distinctive — earthy, bold, and full of character. Arunachal CTC is a rare find that offers a truly unique taste of India's tea frontier.
