Assam vs Darjeeling Tea: What's the Difference?

Two Legends of Indian Tea
India is home to some of the world's most celebrated teas, and two names stand above the rest: Assam and Darjeeling. Both are iconic, both are beloved — but they couldn't be more different in character. Whether you're a seasoned tea drinker or just beginning your journey, understanding the difference will transform how you choose and enjoy your cup.
Where They Come From
Assam tea is grown in the Brahmaputra river valley in Northeast India — a low-altitude, hot, and humid region that produces some of the world's most robust teas. The rich, alluvial soil and heavy rainfall create ideal conditions for the Camellia sinensis var. assamica plant, a large-leafed variety native to the region.
Darjeeling tea is grown high in the foothills of the Himalayas in West Bengal, at elevations between 600 and 2,000 metres. The cool mountain air, misty mornings, and well-drained slopes give Darjeeling tea its famously delicate, muscatel character.
Flavour Profile
Assam: Bold, malty, and brisk with a deep amber liquor. It has a full body that stands up beautifully to milk and sugar — making it the backbone of the classic Indian chai.
Darjeeling: Light, floral, and complex with a distinctive muscatel (grape-like) note. Best enjoyed without milk to appreciate its nuanced flavour. Often called the "Champagne of teas."
First Flush vs Second Flush
Both Assam and Darjeeling teas are harvested in multiple flushes (seasonal pickings) throughout the year:
- First Flush (Spring) — Lighter, more delicate, and highly prized. Darjeeling first flush is especially sought after for its fresh, green character.
- Second Flush (Summer) — Fuller-bodied and more flavourful. Assam second flush is known for its golden tips and rich, malty depth.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose Assam if you love a strong, bold chai with milk — especially in the morning.
- Choose Darjeeling if you prefer a lighter, more aromatic cup to sip and savour on its own.
- Can't decide? Try our D'Assam Blend — the best of both worlds in one cup.
