First Flush vs Second Flush Tea: What Does It Mean?

What is a Tea Flush?

In the world of tea, a flush refers to a seasonal harvest of tea leaves. Tea plants are harvested multiple times a year, and each harvest — or flush — produces leaves with a distinct character shaped by the season's temperature, rainfall, and growing conditions. Understanding flushes is key to appreciating why the same tea garden can produce dramatically different teas throughout the year.

First Flush: The Spring Harvest

The first flush is the very first harvest of the year, typically occurring in March to April after the winter dormancy period. After months of rest, the tea plant bursts into growth with fresh, tender new leaves and buds.

Characteristics of first flush teas:

  • Lighter body and colour
  • Fresh, grassy, or floral notes
  • More delicate and nuanced flavour
  • Higher in antioxidants due to the young leaves
  • Highly prized and often limited in quantity

Darjeeling first flush is the most celebrated example — its fresh, green, muscatel character is unlike any other tea in the world. Our 2025 Darjeeling First Flush captures this magic perfectly.

Second Flush: The Summer Harvest

The second flush is harvested in May to June, after the first flush leaves have been picked and the plant has had time to grow again. The warmer temperatures and longer days produce leaves with a fuller, richer character.

Characteristics of second flush teas:

  • Fuller body and deeper colour
  • Richer, more complex flavour
  • Malty, fruity, or muscatel notes
  • Bolder and more robust than first flush
  • Excellent for drinking with milk

Assam second flush is famous for its golden tips and deep, malty richness. Our Assam Second Flush Black Tea is a beautiful example of this harvest at its best.

Which Flush is Better?

Neither — they're simply different! The best flush depends on your preference:

  • If you love delicate, aromatic teas to sip without milk — go for first flush.
  • If you prefer a bold, full-bodied cup that holds up to milk and spice — second flush is your match.
  • Many tea lovers enjoy both, treating them as seasonal experiences much like wine vintages.

Beyond Two Flushes

Some regions also produce an autumnal flush (October–November), which tends to be milder and earthier. Darjeeling autumnal teas are particularly prized for their smooth, rounded character.
